Dedicated to the nine manifestations of Goddess Durga
The most important Navratri in a year is the Sharadiya Navratra which begins on the first day of the bright half of Ashvin (September-October) as per traditional calendar. This year’s dates are from October 1 to October 10, 2016. The nine-day festival of Navratri is dedicated to the nine manifestations of Goddess Durga- Sailaputri, Brahmacharini, Chandraghanta, Kushmanda, Skanda Mata, Katyayani, Kalaratri, Maha Gouri and Siddhidatri.

Shailaputri
The first manifestation of goddess Durga is considered to be MaaShailputri. She carries the trident and the lotus in her hands. She rides the Bull, Nandi.

Daughter to the mountain
Shailputri as the name suggests Shail in sanskrit means Parvat. Since she was born as a daughter to the mountain-king Himalaya, she is also known as Shailputri. She was named Parvati or Hemvati. She propitiated Lord Shiva by her severe austerity and blessed to have him as her husband. Among the Nine Durgas, the value and command of Mother Shailputri are unlimited. On the first day of auspicious Navaraatri, she alone is adored and worshipped. By the recitation of following mantra as per one’s strength will give astonished results. Brahmacharini
This is the second form of MaaDurga is worshiped on the second day of Navratra when moon is in the chitranakshatra. When in the births of Sati and Parvati Maa durga performed severe penace to get God Shiva as her husband then she becomes highly pious and remain in peaceful form or is in meditation. From then she comes to known as Tapasyacharini or Brahmacharini.

Worship this form of MaaDurga
In this form Durga is two-armed, dressed in white and carries a rudraksha mala in her right hand and sacred Kamandalu in her left hand. Chandraghanta
This form of MaaDurga is worshiped on the third day of Navratra. The bell shaped mark of moon is present on the forhead of MaaChandraghanta, because of this she is known as Chandraghanta. In this form she has ten arms out of which eight arms displayed weapons and other two are in gestures of boon giving mudra and stopping harm.

 

She represents fearless form on lion
Her body colour is Golden and rides on Lion who describes ‘Dharma’ which means when provoked she can be the terrible. She represents fearless form on lion to her devotees. By reciting following Mantra on this day MaaChandraghanta blessed her followers by removing all the sins, grief, physical sufferings, mental tribulations and ghostly hurdles.

Kushmanda
This form of MaaDurga is worshiped on the fourth day of Navratra. The word Kushmanda is made up of three different words “Ku+ Ushma + Anda”. ‘Ku’ means small, ‘Ushma means energy’ and ‘Anda’ means egg. When becomes together means she created the Universe as small cosmic egg. She created solar system by liberating her power to Lord Sun while sitting in the core of the Sun. Only this form of MaaDurga has strength to remain in the core of the Sun for long long time.So MaaKushmanda is also known as the creator the whole universe. MaaKushmanda is also named as ‘Adi Shakti’.
Sun her body shines
By sitting inside the Sun her body shines like the glowing Sun. All directions get light from Her Divine smile including the Sun God itself. MaaKushmanda has eight arms that is why is also known as ‘Ashtabhuja’. In her seven hands she holds Kamandalu, Bow, Arrow, Lotus, a Jar of Nectar, Discus, and Mace. In her eighth hand she holds a mala capable of giving eight Siddhis and nine Niddhis. She rides a lion that represents “Dharma”. Skanda Mata
This form of MaaDurga is worshiped on the fifth day of Navratra. ‘Skanda’ is the other name of her son ‘Kartikeya’, who is born to kill the demon ‘Tarkasur’. That is why she is known as ‘Skandmata’. Her son skanda can be seen sitting in her lap in the images. She has four arms in which she carries a lotus, a kamandalu and a bell. Her one hand is in blessing posture. She was born to slaughter wicked demon named ‘Mahishasur’ who became intolerable on the earth.In this form Durga is four-armed in which she carries a sword, shield and lotus. One hand is depicted as giving blessing. She rides a lion.

Mother Katyayani can give everything to her devotees. It is said that maidens who observed Katyayani Vrat are blessed with the husband of their choice. She is easily satisfied by devotion and demolishes all sins of her devotees blessed them with wealth, pleasures and salvation. Kalaratri
This form of MaaDurga is worshiped on the seventh day of Navratra. This form of MaaDurga has dark complexion, dishevelled hair and fearlessness posture. In this form Durga is four-armed and rides a donkey. She carries sword, trident and noose. With one hand she blesses. She has three eyes which shine bright and terrible flames emanate from her breath. Her vehicle is donkey. Her complexion is black like Maa Kali and holds a sparkling sword in her right hand battle all evil. Her gesture of protection assures us of freedom from fear and trouble. That is why she is also known as ‘Shubhamkari- one who does good.
Mantra for Kalaratri Those who adore and worship her selflessly on this day and recite the following Mantra as per their strength are relieved of all distresses and turmoil. Mahagauri
This form of MaaDurga is worshiped on the eigth day of Navratra.The fact after getting the name of ‘Mahagauri’is when she was in the birth of ‘parvati’she did strong penace in the deep forests of Himalyas, she developed a dark complexion. Then God Shiva became Happy and appeared before her and cleaned her body with Ganga water, her body regained its beauty and she came to be known as ‘Mahagauri’which means extremely white.
The destroys all the distresses
Mahagauri is extremely intelligent, peaceful and calm. She wears white clothes and Rides on a bull. She has four arms. She carries a trishul and a damaru. Two hands are in blessing posture. All the sins of the followers are burnt to ashes by her admiration and worship. She possesses insuperable powers and grant merits on her followers. She destroys all the distresses of her followers and blesses them with all kinds of merits and virtues. Siddhidatri
This form of MaaDurga is worshiped on the ninth day of Navratra. ‘Sidhi’ is a Sanskrit term which means perfection and ‘datri’ means giver. This means she blessed her followers with perfection in anything they want. She has four arms in which she has Mace, Chakra, Conch and a lotus flower. She is seated on a lotus flower with the lion as her mount. She is surrounded by Siddhas, Gandharvas, Yakshas, Demons and Gods who are worshipping her. When her followers worship her with the following Mantra, she removes ignorance and provides the knowledge to realize That or Brahman.
